Dhanbad, Dec 3: A team from the department of Management Studies of IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad today visited Upgraded High School, Raghunathpur Purbi Tund block of district and informed rural students about the significance of science and mathematics in life.
Prof Rajni Singh, dean of media and branding at IIT ISM, said that the team led by Prof Rashmi Singh, assistant professor and principal investigator of the project National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), Department of Science and Technology (DST) organised a workshop for the students at Raghunathpur school and explained them about the significance of science and maths in understanding the technology in today’s technology-driven era.
Associate professor Niladri Das and research scholar Marghoob Enam were other members of the team who reached the school early morning at around 10 AM and addressed over 250 participants, including students and teachers.
“Almost everything that we use in today’s life, be it mobile, TV, computer, refrigerator, washing machine dishwashers are technology dependent. So the knowledge about science and mathematics helps us to understand the operation and functioning of these equipment,” said Prof Rashmi Singh while addressing students.
She further pointed out that knowledge of maths and science offers the power of reasoning, creativity, abstract or spatial thinking, critical thinking, problem-solving ability and even effective communication skills that is essential for any role or responsibility in the technical domain.
Prof Niadri Das, on the other hand, highlighted how knowledge of maths helps to understand costs, balance a bank account, and subtract balances which are essential skills in today’s world.
He further said that knowledge of mathematics allows us to understand basic life skills such as managing budgets, forecasting, and telling time.
Prof Rajni Singh, dean of media and branding said that this was 7th workshop in the series being organized by IIT ISM.
