AI-Alerts To Prevent Natural Calamities? Bharuch Showing The Way

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has touched so many aspects of our lives that questions are being asked on whether it can prevent or caution us about calamities.

With industrial disasters and floods rattling Bharuch frequently, the city’s district administration is using AI-based systems to mitigate catastrophes, a report claimed.

Bharuch is using real-time data on Narmada river water levels to prepare for sudden evacuation and relief measures. The system called e-Rewa, funded by local industries and administration, will receive texts and calls whenever water levels rise. Alerts will be sent through Hooters.

Bharuch district collector Tushar Sumera was quoted as saying, “Last year, we constantly monitored tidal levels and informed the Sardar Sarovar dam authorities so that they don’t release water at the time of tides. We were also gauging the river level at the Golden bridge manually.

“We thought that with so much data, the use of artificial intelligence can be done more effectively for early warning of floods and other disasters. We came up with this project where we installed radar-based sensors on three bridges to gauge water levels.

“We will also have gauge meters to map rain and live tidal levels. We will put all these in the system which will give us an accurate prediction of the potential flood-like situation well in advance and when will water level rise.”

He added that they have teams for different water levels. He told the daily, “If the water level reaches 24 metres, we have the mamlatdar and other staff on alert. Once, it goes to 25m, the system alerts the deputy collector and so on. We will be able to see everything on the app and will be able to warn villages by playing Hooters from our office itself.”
